STAT-Harvard Poll on Americans' Attitudes About Cancer

Cancer is perceived by American adults to be more serious than any other disease or health condition by a four-fold margin, even though it is the second leading cause of death in the nation. Even though heart disease kills more Americans every year than any other disease or health condition, relatively few Americans believe it is more serious then cancer.
